Whitemark worked with Urbis and Plus Architecture on this project which involved some delicate negotiations when the planning rules for plot ratios were suddenly changed in Melbourne, prior to the application being determined.

The original proposal was pared back and amended to finally win the support of the Minister for Planning.

The client, Haagen Daaz wanted to re-launch in Australia and we were able to locate two of the most iconic locations in the country for this building to be temporarily located.

First it was installed in the forecourt of Federation Square on Flinder St, Melbourne and then it was trucked up to Sydney and operated at the Overseas Passenger Terminal in Circular Quay.

The hero shots in front of the Sydney Opera House certainly fulfilled the brief.

This development involved first getting the architect of this award winning pedestrian footbridge, Peter Carmichael, on board with this major change to his design.

Next Melbourne City Council had to be convinced that it was a good addition for the city to have a cafe located in such an unusual location.

A myriad of regulatory controls then had to be navigated and finally support of the Minister to consent to a lease.

This venue is enormously popular and Whitemark is working through the process of approvals for a complete rebuild in the coming year.

Way back in the 1960’s Reg Ansett used to fly from his home in Mt Eliza to his helipad on the Yarra for work each day.

There are currently two floating helipads on the river which are on short term leases. Whitemark (along with Schutz Consulting) is assisting the Helicopter Association of Victoria to secure the planning and regulatory approval to build a larger heliport in the Turning Basin, opposite Crown (where Reg used to land his chopper)

The plan would be to ultimately tidy up the river, remove the existing helipads and create a permanent world class heliport and transport interchange for Melbourne.

With the increase in apartment developments close to flight paths it is important that Melbourne secures this unique ability to land helicopters in the City into the future.

Whitemark is providing the guidance and strategy in this complex project to ensure that there is support at all levels of Government.

This 23 storey development at 405-421 Spencer St retained the old Dalston bakery building on the corner and developed an apartment building around this heritage site.

Working in conjunction with Planning and Property Partners and Plus Architecture this matter went to VCAT where the client was represented by Stuart Morris QC.

In the course of the hearing various concessions were made to the proposed treatment of the heritage building, including retention of the original ovens and chimneys and rebuilding of the roof form after the construction of the basement car parking.
